What works for our skin at twenty is just not suitable at forty, and by sixty dryness, decreasing hormones and wrinkles require a different approach altogether.

Teenagers produce increased amounts of hormones. Both girls and boys make male hormones called androgens and it is under the influence of these androgens that the skin produces extra sebum that makes teenagers prone to acne or problematic skin. Caring for teenage skin is all about cleansing and toning to remove the excess oil with adequate moisturising. Teenage skin holds water well so they need much lighter moisturiser and preferably one that is oil free.
The twenties and thirties is when skin is at its peak. Your skin is at its most responsive during your twenties and thirties so now is the time to seek advice from a qualified Beauty Therapist on options available to address your specific complexion issue.
Wrinkles are age-related skin changes. They are caused by the gradual reduction in elastin and collagen fibres, which give the skin suppleness and strength. This is the time when treatment serums high in vitamin A, C, and E and thick moisturising creams are required.
Developing a good skin care routine is essential to healthy skin. The 3 steps of Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising should be performed morning and night to achieve optimum skin health.
Cleansing
As the title suggests, cleans the skin of accumulated dirt, oil and make up. A cleanser should be gentle on the skin, soap free, alcohol free, chemical free and should leave your skin feeling clean but not dry.
Toning
Restores equilibrium to the oil producing cells of the skin. This oil serves to moisturise and protect the skin against the environment. Alcohol based toners (and cleansers) strip the natural oil from the skin leaving it dry and susceptible to irritation and breakouts. To know if a product contains alcohol look at the ingredient list. Any ingredient ending with 'ol' is alcohol based. Do not use this product!
Moisturising
Serums and creams help protect, repair and hydrate the skin. Your daytime moisturiser should nourish and protect your skin, while your night time moisturiser should help repair and rejuvenate your skin.
Occasionally we need to exfoliate our skin to get rid of the build up of dead cells, sebum and grime which tend to make our skin look dull and cause minor breakouts. But take care, exfoliation should never feel like you've taken a loofah to your face. It should sweep away impurities and grime from the skin's pores without damaging the protective mantle and disturbing the natural pH.
A good sunscreen with SPF30+ will act as a barrier against the sun preventing ageing, wrinkles and skin cancer. While staying out of the sun all the time is not healthy either, sunscreen, sunglasses and hats will go a long way to preventing sun damage.
