What is Remedial Massage?
Remedial is a form of massage that aims to address the cause of pain and dysfunction. Through slow strokes and deep finger pressure the Massage Therapist uses a combination of soft tissue techniques including trigger point therapy, myofascial release, stretching and exercise prescription to relieve pain or soreness, improve joint movement and assist the body’s natural healing process.
Over the course of a day our muscles contract and relax many times. However, accidents, repetitive actions, poor posture and everyday stresses can form permanent, sometimes painful, tension in our muscles. Even worse, around any painful site, muscles automatically contract to support and protect the area. Any tight muscle can’t hold much fluid which means reduced circulation and accumulation of irritating waste products.
Over time, areas with poor circulation form trigger points.
Trigger points are highly irritable spots (commonly called knots) that can refer pain elsewhere in the body. For example, a trigger point in your hip can refer pain down your leg.
Through therapeutic remedial massage, muscle tension and trigger points can be relieved allowing circulation to return bringing with it healing nutrients and oxygen to the area. A deeply relaxing massage can provide a much needed break to everyday stresses helping to calm your nerves and allowing muscles throughout your body to let go and relax.
